cetearyl alcohol
what it is
A waxy solid blend of two plant-derived fatty alcohols, cetyl and stearyl — INCI name Cetearyl Alcohol. First, the confusion the name causes: fatty alcohols are not drying alcohols. They are closer to waxes than to the ethanol in an astringent toner, and alcohol-free marketing refers to ethanol, not to these.
why we use it
It gives creams their body — the difference between a milk and a cream is largely ingredients like this one. It also helps stabilise the emulsion and leaves a soft, conditioned after-feel.
where you'll find it
In feather at 3.00% and in cloud at 3.00%. It also appears in our mineral sunscreen (SPF 50+ PA++++) as part of the cetearyl alcohol (and) polysorbate 60 blend, in the emulsifiers & stabilisers group (12.25% total).

Functional — structure, stability and feel. Its ubiquity across the industry is earned rather than fashionable.
safety
Assessed as safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel. Patch-test literature records occasional sensitivity to fatty alcohols, usually in already-compromised skin; it is uncommon, and worth knowing about if you have a diagnosed contact allergy.
