panthenol

what it is

Pro-vitamin B5 — INCI name Panthenol. Once on skin it converts to pantothenic acid, a compound your skin cells already use. We use the D-form, the biologically relevant one.

why we use it

It is a humectant with a conditioning streak: it draws water in, helps skin hold it, and takes the edge off the tight, uncomfortable feeling that follows cleansing or dry weather. It earns its place in both moisturisers at a meaningful level rather than a label-decorating one.

where you'll find it

In feather at 2.00% and in cloud at 2.00%.

evidence

Strong evidence as a humectant; moderate evidence for skin-soothing and barrier support in cosmetic use. We are comfortable with both of those sentences and would not write stronger ones.

safety

Gentle enough to be a fixture of baby-care formulas, with very low irritation rates and no usage restrictions.
